Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a Blanket are mini cocktail sausages wrapped in crescent roll dough and baked until golden brown. The crescent dough creates a soft, flaky crust around the smoky little smokie sausages. This bite-sized appetizer or party snack offers a simple combination of comforting flavors and can be served with a variety of dipping sauces to complement the doughy exterior and savory filling.

Description

The recipe begins by preheating the oven to 375°F. Crescent dough tubes are unrolled and separated into triangles, each cut lengthwise into three narrow triangles. Mini sausages are placed at the wide end of each dough triangle and rolled up, sealing the dough around the sausage. These are arranged seam side down on a baking sheet.

Baking for 12-14 minutes results in golden brown, flaky dough covering warm, smoky little smokies. The contrast in texture between the soft crust and the juicy sausage adds to the enjoyment. Serving immediately retains the best texture and warmth.

For serving, offering multiple dipping sauces alongside the pigs in a blanket allows guests to choose flavors to accompany the snack. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several days, though the dough softens over time. The recipe also supports making the assembled rolls a day ahead and baking when ready.

Crescent roll dough is recommended for its ease of portioning and baking, though puff pastry is a viable alternative with extra cutting effort.

Notes

  • Offer a variety of dipping sauces when serving to allow choice of flavor accompaniments.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator; best eaten hot as dough softens over time.
  • Assemble pigs in a blanket up to one day in advance; refrigerate covered until ready to bake.
  • Crescent roll dough is preferred for ease of shaping; puff pastry can be used but requires cutting the triangles by hand.
