Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a Blanket are mini cocktail sausages wrapped in crescent roll dough and baked until golden brown. This appetizer has a soft, flaky exterior with a savory smokie inside and a slightly crisp crust. They're quick to prepare and often served as finger food or party snacks.

Description

This recipe calls for opening refrigerated crescent roll dough and cutting it into small strips to individually wrap each mini cocktail smokie. Wrapping the dough around the sausage pieces tightly with sealed edges helps prevent unrolling during baking.

Baked at 375°F for about 12 to 14 minutes, the dough turns a light golden color, complementing the smoky flavor of the cocktail sausages. Cooling briefly after baking helps them firm up for handling.

Pigs in a Blanket are commonly enjoyed warm as appetizers or snacks and can be customized with added fillings like American cheese or caramelized onions inside the dough. They can be made ahead and refrigerated before baking for convenience.

Using parchment paper on the baking sheet helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easier. If mini smokies aren't available, cut hot dogs or cooked breakfast sausage into small pieces as substitutes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 package mini cocktail smokies (48 pcs)
  • 2 packages crescent rolls refrigerated

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Open each can of crescent rolls and, without unrolling, cut each roll into 1-inch pieces. Unroll each strip and cut it into 4 pieces.
  3. Wrap each little smokie with a strip of dough, making sure to pinch the edges to seal.
  4. Place the wrapped smokies, seam side down, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until browned.
  6. Cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Cut dough into strips without strict measurement; approximate size works fine.
  • Parchment paper on the baking sheet prevents sticking and aids cleanup.
  • Add cheese or caramelized onion inside the dough wrapper for variation.
  • Prepare and refrigerate wrapped pigs in a blanket up to 24 hours before baking for convenience.
  • If you don't have mini smokies, cut hot dogs or breakfast sausage into ~1.5-inch pieces as substitutes.
  • Brushing dough with butter or egg wash before baking and adding toppings like sesame or poppy seeds can enhance flavor and appearance.
