Pigs in a Blanket Recipe
Description
This recipe uses refrigerated crescent roll dough unrolled and cut into smaller triangles to wrap around cocktail smoked sausages. Wrapping each sausage with a tight roll of dough creates a sealed package that bakes with a golden, flaky crust. Baking at 375 degrees for 9-11 minutes cooks the dough through and heats the sausage thoroughly. The result is a pleasant contrast between the soft, buttery pastry and smoky meat inside.
These pigs in a blanket serve well fresh from the oven as finger food. Options for flavor variations include sprinkling seeds or spices on top before baking. Leftovers can be stored refrigerated for several days or frozen after flash freezing. Reheating in the oven maintains crispness better than the microwave.
Advance preparation is possible by wrapping sausages in dough a day or two before baking, stored chilled until ready to cook.
Ingredients
- 1-8 oz. crescent rolls regular or butter flavored, package, refrigerated
- 1-12 oz. smoked link sausages Lit’l Smokies, cocktail-sized
Instructions
- Roll the Piggies: Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate the triangles. Cut each triangle into 3 smaller triangles using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Place a sausage link that has been patted dry at the wider edge of a piece of crescent dough and roll it up until it is completely wrapped around the link. Repeat this process with the remaining dough and sausages.
- Bake in the Oven: Place them seam-side down on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet at least 1 inch apart. Bake in the 375 degree oven for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are golden. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- You can prepare the dough-wrapped sausages up to 2 days ahead and refrigerate them before baking.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days or freeze for 3-4 months after flash freezing individually.
- Reheat in a 300℉ oven for 5-10 minutes to retain crispness; microwaving will soften the dough.
- Cut crescent dough into thin strips for proper wrapping and roll tightly to prevent dough from unrolling during baking.
- Leave space between pieces on the baking sheet to allow expansion while baking.
- Enhance flavor by adding toppings like poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or garlic powder before baking.
