Pineapple Glazed Ham
Description
This Pineapple Glazed Ham recipe uses a fully cooked boneless ham as the base. After preheating the oven, the ham is placed flat-side down on a foil-lined pan coated with cooking spray. A small amount of water is added to the pan to maintain moisture during baking. The ham is covered with foil before baking for one and a half hours to heat through gently without drying out.
The glaze combines drained, crushed pineapple with brown sugar, honey, spicy brown mustard, salt, and cornstarch to create a sweet, tangy sauce with gentle thickening. This mixture is cooked on the stovetop until bubbly and slightly thickened. After initial baking, the ham is uncovered, glazed generously, covered again, and baked for an additional 30 minutes while occasionally basted to encourage caramelization and flavor absorption.
Once the ham is cooked through to 145 degrees Fahrenheit internally, it is sliced and served with the pan glaze on the side. The glaze provides a balanced sweetness and moisture to the savory, cured ham. This preparation is ideal for festive occasions or family meals, offering a flavorful centerpiece with manageable preparation steps.
Leftover ham stores well in the refrigerator for several days and can be portioned in the freezer for longer storage. Pineapple juice can substitute water in the pan for extra flavor, and mustard types can be varied to adjust the glaze's spice level. Recipes using leftover ham include salads, casseroles, or breakfast dishes. Using a rimmed sheet pan of appropriate size helps contain the glaze and reduces cleanup.
Ingredients
- 1 boneless fully cooked ham (about 3 pounds)
- ¼ cup water
Glaze
- 8 ounces pineapple drained, crushed
- 1 cup brown sugar packed
- ¼ cup honey
- 1 teaspoon brown mustard spicy
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with foil, then coat with cooking spray.
- Place ham, flat side down, in the prepared pan. Add ¼ cup water to the bottom of the pan. Then cover ham and pan with aluminum foil.
- Place in preheated oven and bake for 1 ½ hours.
- In a small saucepan, combine pineapple, brown sugar, honey, mustard, salt, and cornstarch, stir to combine.
- Cook over medium-high heat until bubbly, stirring constantly. Once fully bubbling, turn down heat to low and continue simmering while stirring for 1 minute longer.
- Remove foil and pour glaze over ham. Cover ham again and bake for another 30 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Baste occasionally, if desired.
- Once cooked, remove ham from pan and slice. Pour glaze from the roasting pan into a gravy boat to serve alongside the ham.
Notes
- Store leftover sliced ham in an airtight container in the refrigerator for three to four days.
- Freeze diced ham in portioned bags for up to three months for convenient future use.
- Substitute pineapple juice for water in the baking pan for enhanced flavor.
- Experiment with different types of mustard to adjust the glaze's spice level.
- Use the leftover ham in recipes like ham salad, one-pot ham and penne, scalloped potatoes with ham, or breakfast casseroles.
- Using a smaller rimmed baking pan helps contain the glaze and eases cleanup; foil lining also simplifies washing.
