Pinwheel Sandwiches
Description
This recipe starts by spreading a thin layer of butter or mayo on lavash bread. Next, layers of nitrate-free ham and fresh butter lettuce leaves are added. The bread is rolled from the end opposite the empty edge to prevent fillings from spilling out, rolled tightly but carefully to avoid tearing.
The roll is cut into four equal pieces, secured with sandwich picks, and served chilled or refrigerated later. The result is a compact sandwich bite with contrasting textures of tender bread, savory ham, and crisp lettuce. This method works similarly with tortillas but may yield fewer pieces due to size.
These pinwheels are convenient for parties or light meals and can be prepared ahead. Avoid freezing, as the bread texture may degrade. Variations using different deli meats or vegetables can be made.
Ingredients
- 1 heet lavash bread
- ½ oz butter or mayo (if desired)
- 10 lices ham (nitrate free, preferred)
- 10 leaves butter lettuce
OTHER OPTIONS: Your choice of meat, vegetables and/or cheese
Instructions
- Place the lavash bread on a board, and spread with butter or mayo (if desired.)
- Layer ingredients.
- Roll tightly, and seam side down, cut into four equal pieces.
- Secure with sandwich picks, and serve or refrigerate.
- (If using tortilla, follow the same directions, but cut the ends off for equal sized pieces.) Also, you will only get two or 3 pieces from each tortilla, depending on the size.
Notes
- Leave about 1 inch of space on one edge of the lavash before rolling to keep fillings contained.
- Roll the bread as tightly as possible without breaking it to maintain shape.
- If adding wet ingredients like tomatoes, make these pinwheels closer to serving time to avoid sogginess.
- Do not freeze pinwheel sandwiches, as freezing affects bread texture.
- Nutrition info corresponds to one lavash pinwheel with butter, ham, and lettuce.
