Pizza Casserole
Description
This Pizza Casserole begins with refrigerated biscuit dough cut into pieces and combined with pizza sauce and half the shredded mozzarella. This mixture is spread into a greased baking dish, topped with the remaining mozzarella and preferred pizza toppings such as pepperoni, then sprinkled with pizza seasoning. Baking at 375°F creates golden biscuits with melted cheese and nicely cooked toppings on top.
The casserole offers a texture that balances tender biscuits inside with lightly crisped edges, and the familiar savory taste of pizza ingredients. It serves as a casual meal or comfort food side.
This recipe allows for prep ahead storage in the fridge, freezing after baking, and reheating in the oven or microwave. Various pizza toppings can be used, and biscuit dough may be substituted with flaky biscuits or pizza dough. The sauce can make biscuit pieces tacky outside but the inside cooks through well; tenting with foil can help finish baking without overbrowning.
Ingredients
- 1 (16.3-ounce) can grands biscuits
- 1 (8-ounce) jar pizza sauce Classico or homemade pizza sauce
- 3 cups mozzarella cheese shredded (and divided
- 1 teaspoon pizza seasoning
- Pizza toppings
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Cut the 8 biscuits into 8 parts each. Add those to a bowl and mix with 8 ounces pizza sauce, and half the shredded Mozzarella cheese. Mix well and pour into a greased 9x13 baking dish.
- Top this with remaining shredded cheese and pepperoni slices. Sprinkle pizza seasoning on top. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until biscuits are golden brown and cheese begins to brown.
Notes
- Prepare the casserole a day ahead and store covered in the refrigerator; add extra baking time if baking from chilled.
- To freeze, bake first, then cool, wrap tightly, and freeze for up to 3 months; thaw before reheating.
- Leftovers keep up to 4 days refrigerated or 2-3 months frozen; reheat in oven or microwave.
- Divide ingredients evenly in two smaller pans for smaller portions; bake 18-20 minutes.
- Use any favorite pizza toppings; refrigerated biscuit dough can be swapped for flaky biscuits or pizza dough.
- If the biscuit pieces become tacky from the sauce, tent with foil while finishing baking to cook through without overbrowning.
