Pizza Rolls

Pizza Rolls are made by spreading pizza sauce, mozzarella, and optional pepperoni over rolled-out pizza dough, then rolling it into a log, chilling, slicing, and baking. The process yields bite-sized rolls with a tender dough exterior and a melty, savory filling, combining classic pizza flavors in a convenient finger food. Chilling the dough log helps maintain shape and produces clean slices for baking.

Description

This recipe begins with preparing or preparing pizza dough, then rolling it out into a rectangular shape. Olive oil is brushed on the surface before layering pizza sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese evenly, with pepperoni added if desired. The dough is rolled tightly into a log from the longer edge and chilled for at least 15 minutes, firming the dough to allow easier slicing without losing shape.

After chilling, the log is sliced into rounds and baked until golden and cooked through. The baked pizza rolls have a crisp exterior from olive oil brushing and a soft, cheesy, and saucy interior. Parmesan cheese and basil may be sprinkled on top after baking for additional flavor.

These rolls make convenient snacks or party appetizers, combining the taste of pizza in small, portable portions. They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in an airtight container.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pizza dough click link for recipe, homemade
  • olive oil for brushing
  • ¼-⅓ cup pizza sauce
  • 6 oz mozzarella cheese shredded
  • pepperoni optional
  • 2 Tablespoons butter melted, salted
  • Parmesan Cheese for sprinkling, optional, grated
  • basil optional, fresh shredded or dried, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare pizza dough as per instructions. Once dough is finished rising, turn out onto a lightly floured surface, knead briefly to create a smooth and cohesive dough (about 3-5 times) and roll dough into a 15x9” (38 x 23cm) rectangle.
  2. Brush surface of the dough lightly with olive oil. Spread pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a ¼” (0.6cm) perimeter around the edges. Sprinkle cheese evenly over the sauce. Layer pepperoni evenly on top of the cheese, if using.
  3. Starting with the longer end of the rectangle, roll tightly into a log. Place on a parchment paper lined baking tray or plate and transfer to the refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes (if chilling longer than 15 minutes, cover with plastic wrap). This will make the roll easier to cut and less likely to spring apart in the oven. While pizza roll is chilling, preheat oven to 400F (205C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Once oven is preheated, remove log from the refrigerator and use a serrated knife to cut pizza roll into 1” (2.5cm) segments. Lay these flat on prepared baking sheet, spacing rolls at least 1” (2.5cm) apart.
  5. Use a pastry brush to lightly brush the surface of each roll with melted butter.
  6. Transfer to center rack of 400F (205C) preheated oven and bake for 15-18 minutes until edges are golden brown.
  7. After removing from the oven sprinkle tops with parmesan cheese and fresh basil, if desired. Allow to cool slightly before enjoying.
