Description
Pizza Sticks feature mozzarella string cheese sliced lengthwise to create a channel filled with mini pepperoni. Wrapped snugly in egg roll wrappers that are sealed with water, they are deep-fried in vegetable oil until the wrappers reach a golden crisp. This cooking method seals in the melted cheese and pepperoni, resulting in a rich, gooey interior with a crunchy exterior. The addition of extra pepperoni inside the wrapper enhances the flavor in each bite.
The combination of melted mozzarella and the savory, mildly spiced mini pepperoni offers a satisfying snack suitable for parties or casual meals. Ingredients
- 12 mozzarella string cheese see note 1, sticks
- 1 package mini pepperoni (see note 2)
- 12 egg roll wrappers (see note 3)
- 2 quarts vegetable oil or canola oil, for frying
- marinara sauce for serving
Instructions
- Slice the string cheese sticks lengthwise about 75% of the way through to make a crevice. Fill each crevice with 4 slices of mini pepperoni.
- Working with one egg roll wrapper at a time, lay a wrapper on a cutting board or other flat surface and brush the edges with water. Arrange a filled cheese stick on one side. Add 4 more mini pepperoni on the wrapper next to the cheese stick.
- Starting at the end of the wrapper with the cheese stick, roll the wrapper tightly around the cheese stick and the pepperoni. When the cheese stick is about 75% rolled, fold in the sides like a burrito and continue rolling.
- Seal the edges of the egg roll wrapper on itself. Set aside on a plate covered with a damp paper towel and repeat with remaining wrappers, cheese, and pepperoni.
- Heat oil in a sauce pan, stock pot, or electric deep fryer to 350 degrees. Working in batches, deep-fry 3 to 4 pizza sticks at a time until the egg roll wrapper is golden brown on all sides, about 3 minutes.
- Remove to a plate lined with paper towels and repeat with remaining pizza sticks. Serve pizza sticks warm with the marinara dipping sauce on the side.
