Ploughman's Open Sandwich

The Ploughman's Open Sandwich is a rustic assembly on buttered rye bread featuring heaped Branston Pickle, fresh watercress, slices of quality ham, cheddar cheese, tomato, and cucumber, finished with mayonnaise and a garnish of cornichons and watercress. The combination provides a balance of creamy, tangy, fresh, and savory elements in each bite.

Description

This open sandwich layers a buttered rye bread base with Branston Pickle, which adds a sweet and tangy note, followed by fresh watercress contributing peppery crispness. Thin slices of good-quality ham and cheddar cheese provide protein and richness. Fresh slices of cucumber and tomato lend a cool, juicy freshness, and a drizzle of mayonnaise adds creaminess to tie the components together.

The garnish of fanned cocktail gherkins (cornichons) and a sprig of watercress adds a bright finish and extra texture contrast. The sandwich balances savory, tangy, creamy, and fresh flavors in a simple yet satisfying bite.

This sandwich is suitable for a light lunch or snack, offering a variety of flavors and textures that complement each other well.

Using a multi-cheese option like "Five Counties cheese" can add complexity by introducing several English cheese varieties layered together.
