Pomegranate Syrup

Pomegranate Syrup is made by simmering equal parts pomegranate seeds, sugar, and water until the seeds break down and the mixture thickens when cooled. The syrup is strained to remove the seeds, resulting in a smooth, sweet, and slightly tangy liquid that can be used in drinks, dressings, or desserts. It stores well in the fridge for up to two weeks, making it practical for frequent use.

Description

Pomegranate Syrup is prepared by gently boiling pomegranate seeds with sugar and water to extract the juice and sweeten it. The simmering softens the seeds, allowing flavors to meld. After cooling slightly, the mixture is pressed through a fine mesh strainer to separate the syrup from the seeds and solids, leaving a deep crimson, flavorful liquid. This syrup thickens further as it cools, resulting in a rich texture and concentrated taste.

The syrup captures the unique tartness and sweetness of pomegranates, suitable for adding brightness to beverages or drizzling over food. Because it contains only pomegranate, sugar, and water, it offers a clean, pure flavor profile that accentuates other ingredients rather than overpowering them.

Stored in a refrigerated jar or bottle, the syrup keeps up to two weeks. This makes it useful for creating pomegranate-themed cocktails or enhancing salad dressings without needing fresh juice each time.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup pomegranate seeds fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup sugar 200g, granulated white
  • 1 cup water 235g

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a pot.
  2. Stir it together, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes, until the pomegranate seeds start to break down. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly.
  3. TIP: The syrup will thicken up when it's cool.
  4. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl or jug and pour in the mixture. Press the pomegranate seeds into the strainer to extract as much pomegranate syrup as possible. Allow the mixture to cool, then pour into a jar or bottle and keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
