Poor Man’s Lobster

Poor Man’s Lobster is a simple cod preparation that simulates lobster’s delicate texture by poaching fish in a sweetened salted water, then broiling it with butter and spices. The fish develops a tender flaky texture, enhanced by a crust of melted butter and paprika. Served with lemon and extra butter for dipping, this dish offers a budget-friendly alternative to lobster while maintaining a rich mouthfeel and bright finish.

Description

Poor Man’s Lobster features cod pieces boiled briefly in water seasoned with sugar and salt to infuse subtle sweetness and seasoning. After poaching, the fish is carefully moved to a broiler pan, brushed with melted butter, and generously seasoned with salt, pepper, and paprika for a mildly smoky, savory crust. The broiling step creates a gentle browning and helps the fish flake easily, simulating the texture and richness often associated with lobster.

The resulting fish is tender but firm enough to handle broiling, with a balanced flavor from the seasoning and butter. Serving it with lemon wedges and extra melted butter complements the mild fish and adds a bright acidity and richness to the dish, creating a straightforward entrée that highlights simple ingredients and cooking techniques.
