Pot Roast Gravy
Description
The Pot Roast Gravy recipe uses 2-3 cups of roast drippings or beef broth combined with cornstarch as a thickening agent. After straining the broth to remove solids, a cornstarch slurry is whisked in while gently simmering until the gravy thickens. Salt and black pepper are adjusted at the end to balance the flavor. This process yields a rich, velvety gravy that complements the hearty flavors of pot roast.
The gravy can be served immediately with pot roast or other cooked beef, adding moisture and depth. It can also be stored in the refrigerator or freezer for future use, making it convenient for meal planning.
For proper consistency, simmering the gravy long enough to thicken is important, and additional cornstarch slurry may be added if needed. Leftovers should be stored airtight for up to 5 days refrigerated or 3 months frozen, and reheated gently with added broth if too thick.
Ingredients
- 2-3 cups roast drippings from cooked pot roast
- 2½ tablespoons corn starch
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Pour the beef broth through a strainer to remove any solids. Pour the broth into a skillet.
- Remove 3 tablespoons of the broth and add to a small bowl, then whisk together with the cornstarch until well blended.
- Bring the broth in the skillet to a simmer, then whisk in the cornstarch mixture. Cook until thickened.
- Taste and adjust salt and pepper according to taste.
Notes
- If roast drippings are unavailable, substitute with 2-3 cups of beef broth or stock.
- To thicken the gravy further, prepare a cornstarch slurry by mixing 2-3 teaspoons of cornstarch with equal cold water, then stir into simmering gravy.
- Simmer the gravy sufficiently to reach desired thickness before serving.
- Store leftover gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheat slowly on the stovetop, adding beef broth if the gravy becomes too thick.
