Pull Apart Bread Recipe

Pull Apart Bread creates a round loaf cut into a grid pattern filled with shredded Monterey Jack cheese and drizzled with melted butter mixed with poppy seeds. The bread is baked covered then uncovered to melt the cheese thoroughly. Chopped green onions finished on top add a fresh bite to the warm cheesy loaf. This recipe is ideal for sharing as an appetizer or snack where guests can easily tear off cheesy morsels. The combination of soft sourdough and melty cheese makes for satisfying texture and flavor contrast.

Description

The Pull Apart Bread Recipe uses an unsliced round sourdough loaf sliced into a crisscross pattern without cutting all the way through, reserving about an inch at the bottom to hold it together. Shredded Monterey Jack cheese is packed into every cut allowing cheese to melt throughout the loaf during baking. A mixture of melted butter and poppy seeds is drizzled generously over the bread before it is baked covered in foil to ensure the cheese melts gently. Towards the end, the foil is removed to allow the top to develop slightly crisp edges. Finally, the bread is garnished with finely chopped green onions providing a fresh herbal accent.

The combination of sourdough bread’s firm crust and tender interior with the creamy melted Monterey Jack offers a flavorful, interactive eating experience. Tearing the bread apart releases gooey cheese from within pockets of bread. This makes it suitable to enjoy alone as a snack or to accompany soups and salads as a warm side. It works well for sharing at casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb sourdough bread unsliced, round loaf
  • 1 lb Monterey jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 2-3 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup green onions chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. With a bread knife, cut 1-inch slices width-wise in the loaf. Make sure not to cut through to the bottom of the loaf! Stop cutting when you're about 1 inch to the bottom. Repeat the 1-inch cuts in the opposite direction.
  3. Once the bread is cut, shred the Monterey Jack cheese and stuff it into every nook and cranny in the bread cuts. Make sure to get it everywhere so that the bread is cheesy throughout!
  4. Mix melted butter and poppy seeds and drizzle over bread.
  5. Tent foil over bread and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake a additional 10 minutes, until cheese is melted. Garnish with green onions.
