Pull-Apart Pepperoni Pizza Sliders
Description
This recipe starts by broiling cut slider buns brushed with melted butter seasoned with garlic powder, oregano, and basil, creating a golden, toasted base. Italian sausage is cooked and crumbled, then layered with chopped pepperoni and shredded mozzarella over the bottom halves of the rolls in a baking pan. A tomato-based marinara sauce is spooned over the meat and cheese before topping with the remaining roll halves brushed with more of the butter mixture.
Baking the assembled sliders melts the cheese and melds flavors while keeping the rolls soft and pull-apart friendly. The contrast between toasty cut sides and soft tops delivers a pleasant texture.
Using slider, dinner, or pull-apart rolls makes assembly easier. Broiling is optional but recommended to avoid soggy bread. These sliders work well as appetizers, snacks, or casual meals.
Store-bought rolls such as Hawaiian sweet rolls are suitable, though homemade bread can add a fresh-baked dimension. Using freshly shredded mozzarella improves melting compared to pre-shredded versions.
Ingredients
- 8 tablespoons butter melted, salted
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon oregano dried
- ½ teaspoon basil dried
- 12 slider buns see note
- 12 dinner rolls
- 12 pull-apart rolls
- 8 ounces Italian sausage
- 1 cup pepperoni chopped
- ½ to 1 to 1 cup marinara sauce see note
- 1 ½ cups mozzarella cheese preshredded won't melt quite as well as cheese you grate yourself, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven broiler to high and make sure an oven rack is in upper third of the oven. Line a 9X13-inch pan with parchment or foil (or you can lightly grease with cooking spray, but I like to line the pan to make cleanup easier).
- Stir together the butter, garlic powder, oregano and basil.
- Slice the slab of rolls in half (like a hamburger bun). Place each half cut side up on a large baking sheet pan, and use 1/2 of the butter mixture to brush on the cut halves.
- Broil until golden and toasty, 1-3 minutes (watch closely!). Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Change the oven temperature to 350 degrees F.
- Place the bottom half of the rolls cut side up in the prepared 9X13-inch pan. Sprinkle the pepperoni evenly on top, followed by the cooked and crumbled sausage.
- Drizzle or spoon the pizza sauce across the top, and then sprinkle the mozzarella over the top.
- Top with the other half of rolls. Brush the top of the rolls with the remaining butter mixture.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes until the rolls are hot and cheese is melted.
- Serve warm!
Notes
- Choose store-bought pull-apart rolls like Hawaiian sweet rolls for convenience or make your own French bread rolls slightly pressed flat for similar results.
- Broil the roll halves to add crunch and prevent soggy bread, though this step can be skipped for a softer texture and increased sauce amount.
- Use shredded mozzarella from block cheese for better melting than preshredded.
