Puppychow

Puppychow is a sweet snack mix made by coating cereal with a melted combination of semi-sweet chocolate, creamy peanut butter, butter, and vanilla, then tossing it in powdered sugar. This creates crunchy, chocolate-peanut clusters with a sweet, slightly salty balance. The process involves carefully melting and mixing the chocolate and peanut butter to coat the cereal evenly before incorporating powdered sugar for a powdery finish. The mix can be enjoyed as a handheld treat and stored for a week.

Description

Puppychow, also known as Muddy Buddies, starts with a large quantity of crispy Rice Chex cereal spread out in a bowl. The coating is prepared by microwaving semi-sweet chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, butter, and salt until melted and smooth, then mixing in vanilla. The warm chocolate mixture is gently stirred with the cereal so each piece receives an even coating.

Powdered sugar is added gradually in multiple tosses to absorb excess oil and provide a sweet, slightly powdery texture. The coated cereal is spread on parchment to cool and crisp slightly, resulting in bite-sized clusters that combine the crunch of cereal with creamy chocolate and peanut butter flavor. The mixture balances sweetness from sugar and chocolate with a touch of salt.

This snack is easily stored in an airtight container for up to a week and is best enjoyed within a day or two of preparation for optimal freshness. Substitutions of cereal types are possible to suit taste or availability, and the recipe yields several large servings ideal for sharing or snacking over multiple days.

Rice Chex can be replaced with similar textured cereals like Corn Chex or Chocolate Chex.Semi-sweet chocolate chips provide balanced sweetness compared to milk chocolate.Store the snack airtight for up to one week for best freshness.Best flavor and texture are achieved when eaten within 1 to 2 days of preparation.Yield is about 14 cups or roughly 28 half-cup servings.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 (12-ounce) box rice chex cereal about 11 cups
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips 10 ounces, semi-sweet
  • 3/4 cup peanut butter such as Skippy or Jif, creamy
  • 6 tablespoons butter cut into 6 pieces (3/4 stick)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt plus more, to taste
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar divided

Instructions

  1. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, add cereal and set aside.
  2. In a medium-sized microwave-safe bowl, add chocolate, peanut butter, butter, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. Stir, then continue microwaving in 15-second intervals, stirring after each, until almost melted, about 45 seconds. Remove from the microwave and stir until smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Taste and add more salt to taste.
  3. Gently pour chocolate mixture over the cereal. Toss until all the cereal is evenly coated. Add powdered sugar one cup at a time, tossing the mixture each time. Add the remaining 1/2 cup powdered sugar and toss, ensuring cereal is evenly coated.
  4. Pour onto the prepared baking sheet and spread into an even layer. Allow to cool, about 10 minutes. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Notes

  • Substitute Rice Chex with Corn Chex, Chocolate Chex, Honey Nut Chex, Peanut Butter Chex, or Crispix as preferred.
  • Use semi-sweet chocolate chips for balanced sweetness; milk chocolate can be too sweet in this recipe.
  • Store the Puppy Chow in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.
  • Puppy Chow tastes best within one to two days after making but remains safe to eat for up to seven days.
  • This recipe makes about 14 cups of Puppy Chow, yielding about 28 servings of half a cup each.
