Quick and Easy Boiled Shrimp Recipe
Description
Starting with 1.15 pounds of raw shrimp, peeled and deveined, this recipe uses the shrimp shells to create a lightly seasoned boiling liquid infused with garlic salt, black pepper, and bay leaf. The shells impart subtle flavor to the broth. Shrimp are simmered in boiling water for only 2 to 3 minutes until they turn pink, indicating they are just cooked through. Immediately transferring the shrimp to cold water halts cooking and preserves a firm, juicy texture.
The method is simple and relies on minimal seasoning for the shrimp themselves, making it versatile for various dishes or serving simply chilled with sauces. This approach preserves the shrimp’s natural taste and delicate bite.
Ingredients
- 1.15 lbs Shrimp equals about 1 lb after it's cooked, raw, shell-on
- 8 cups water filtered
- 1 Tbsp garlic salt I use Lawry's brand
- 1/2 tsp black pepper ground
- 1-2 bay leaf
Instructions
- Depending on how you are serving your shrimp, you can leave the shells on or off. I peel and devein first and keep the shells for the shrimp boil.
- Place the shells from the shrimp in a large sauce pan along with 1 Tbsp garlic salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, and bay leaf. Add 8 cups water and bring to a boil over med/high heat.
- Once water boils, add the peeled and deveined shrimp and simmer until pink, about 2-3 minutes depending on size of the shrimp. Drain and transfer cooked shrimp to a bowl of cold water to stop the cooking process and let cool.
