Quick & Easy Asian Breaded Tofu Nuggets

These Asian Breaded Tofu Nuggets are made by cubing extra-firm tofu, drying it thoroughly to ensure crispiness, seasoning with salt and spices, and coating in cornstarch, egg, and panko breadcrumbs before pan-frying until golden brown. The textured nuggets are served with a tangy katsu sauce made from Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, oyster sauce, and sugar, which complements the crispy tofu coating and tender interior.

Description

This recipe starts by cutting extra-firm tofu into bite-sized cubes and patting them dry to remove moisture, which is essential for the coating to adhere well. Each tofu cube is seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, and salt before being dredged sequentially in cornstarch, beaten eggs, and panko breadcrumbs to create a crispy outer shell.

The nuggets are pan-fried in vegetable oil at medium heat, frying each side for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown. Allowing excess oil to drip off after frying helps keep them crisp rather than soggy. The accompanying katsu sauce mixes Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, oyster sauce (or vegetarian stir-fry sauce), and sugar to balance tangy, savory, and sweet flavors.

This tofu nugget recipe provides a crunchy texture on the outside while maintaining a soft tofu middle, offering a satisfying plant-based alternative to fried chicken nuggets.

  • 2 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce or vegetarian stir fry sauce
  • 2 teaspoon granulated sugar white

Instructions

  1. First dice extra-firm tofu into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Then pat dry the tofu cubes with clean paper towels to remove excess moisture. This is important or your coating will fall off.
  3. Next generously season tofu cubes with an even sprinkle of salt, garlic powder, onion powder on both sides.
  4. Then prepare fill one large shallow bowl with cornstarch, a second bowl with beaten egg and the third bowl with panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Generously coat each seasoned tofu cube into the cornstarch first, then beaten egg and panko breadcrumbs last ensuring no bald spots.
  6. Next heat vegetable oil in a large pan on medium heat, around 350 degrees F with a digital instant read thermometer or place a wooden utensil into the oil and if bubbles form, it's time to fry. Fry tofu on each side until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Transfer the fried tofu to a wire rack or paper-towel lined plate to remove excess oil.
  7. Lastly in a small bowl, combine Katsu sauce ingredients. Enjoy with tofu!
