Raisin Sauce for Ham

This Raisin Sauce for Ham combines sweetness from brown sugar and raisins with tang from apple cider vinegar and brightness from orange zest. The sauce thickens with cornstarch and is simmered with whole cloves for subtle spice aromas. Finished with butter and a pinch of salt, it creates a warm, glossy topping that complements the savoriness of ham. The sauce's balance of fruity and sweet-and-sour notes enriches baked or glazed ham, enhancing its flavor with a gentle, textured sweetness from softened raisins.

Description

Raisin Sauce for Ham uses a mix of water, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar as a base, thickened with cornstarch and infused with whole cloves during simmering. Adding raisins and orange zest introduces chewy texture and citrus brightness. The final step of stirring in butter smooths and enriches the sauce, which is then seasoned with a pinch of salt. The sauce's sweet, tangy, and aromatic profile pairs well when spooned warm over ham, providing a contrast to the meat’s savory richness.

The cloves add a gentle depth without overpowering, while the raisins provide bursts of sweetness. The sauce's consistency is slightly thickened but pourable, suitable as a glaze or accompaniment.

This sauce can also serve as a topping for pound cake or ice cream, offering versatility beyond ham. Optional additions like dry mustard or spirits could alter the flavor but are not necessary for the core recipe.
