Ranch Dressing Recipe
Description
The recipe begins with combining buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream to create a rich and creamy base. Minced fresh herbs such as dill and parsley or their dried counterparts add herbal brightness, while red onion and garlic contribute pungency. Lemon juice or vinegar provides acidity, and a pinch of sugar rounds out the flavors. Salt and freshly ground pepper are added to taste, making the dressing savory and balanced.
The dressing is whisked together and chilled until serving to allow flavors to meld. It can be used as a versatile accompaniment for green salads, as a dip for vegetables or chips, or alongside grilled meats. The creamy buttermilk adds slight tanginess while keeping it smooth.
Storage requires refrigeration in a covered container for up to 4 days. If separation occurs, simply whisk or shake before using. Adjusting the type of onion or omitting sugar can tailor the flavor profile to preference.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup buttermilk (see note 1)
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 6 tablespoons sour cream
- 1 tablespoon red onion minced (or 1 teaspoon onion powder, see note 2)
- 1 tablespoon dill minced, or 1 1/2 teaspoons dried dill weed, fresh
- 1 tablespoon parsley minced, or 1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley, fresh
- 1 clove garlic minced or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice or white vinegar
- Pinch granulated sugar (see note 3)
- salt freshly ground
- black pepper freshly ground
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, mayonnaise, sour cream, red onion, dill, parsley, garlic, lemon juice, sugar, and salt and pepper to taste (I like 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper). Chill until serving time and whisk to recombine before serving.
Notes
- Use real buttermilk or homemade buttermilk (milk mixed with lemon juice or vinegar) for best flavor and texture.
- A minced shallot can substitute for red onion if preferred.
- A small pinch of sugar enhances the dressing's flavor but can be omitted if desired.
- Yield is about 1 1/2 cups, suitable for approximately 12 servings of 2 tablespoons each.
- Store dressing refrigerated up to 4 days; whisk again before serving if ingredients separate.
