Ravioli Casserole
Description
This casserole starts with a sauce prepared by browning ground beef with diced onions, seasoning it with basil, oregano, salt, and pepper, then simmering with marinara and petite diced tomatoes. The sauce’s slight liquid consistency accommodates the ravioli's absorption during baking. Layers of fresh ravioli alternate with sauce and shredded mozzarella in a baking dish. Covered with foil to prevent cheese sticking, it bakes at 375°F initially, then uncovered to brown the cheese and create slight caramelization on top.
The final result is a hearty casserole combining pasta and rich beef tomato sauce topped with melted mozzarella. It delivers a dish that is simple to assemble yet satisfying, ideal for easy weeknight dinners. The baked ravioli absorbs the flavors and juices, enhancing texture and taste compared to reheating cooked ravioli separately.
If using higher fat ground beef (85/15 or more), draining excess fat after browning before continuing with sauce preparation helps avoid greasiness. This casserole is best served warm and can be reheated gently to preserve cheese texture and pasta moisture.
Ingredients
For the Sauce:
- 1 yellow onion diced
- 1 lb ground beef
- 25 oz marinara sauce
- 14.5 oz diced tomatoes 1 can, petite
- 1/2 cup water cold
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 1 tsp basil dried
- 1/2 tsp oregano dried
For the Baked Ravioli
- 30 oz ravioli refrigerated
- 8 oz mozzarella cheese grated
Instructions
make the sauce
- Spray a large, nonstick skillet with cooking spray and place over medium heat. Add in the diced onion and ground beef. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Break apart the meat as it browns.
- Once meat is completely browned, add in marinara sauce, petite diced tomatoes, water, more salt & pepper and seasonings. Bring to boil, then reduce to simmer. You will want to cook this for at least 10 minutes. It's ok if its a little watery because the ravioli will absorb that extra moisture to cook in the oven.
layer the ravioli
- Preheat oven to 375° F. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray. Layer 15 oz of fresh ravioli in the bottom of the pan. Top with half of the sauce and half of the grated cheese. Top with remaining ravioli, sauce and cheese.
bake
- Cover with lightly greased foil (to prevent the cheese from sticking) and bake 30 minutes. Remove the foil and cook another 10 minutes to brown the cheese. Alternately, you can broil for 1 minute.
- Let the baked ravioli rest 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Drain excess fat if using ground beef with 85% lean or higher before adding onions and sauce ingredients to avoid a greasy casserole.
