Red Sangria
Description
Red Sangria brings together red wine with brandy, citrus juices, and a blend of sliced fresh fruits including orange, lemon, and strawberries. The mixture is mixed to dissolve added sugar and refrigerated for at least 30 minutes, or up to eight hours, allowing the flavors to blend. Adding lemon-lime soda just before serving adds effervescence and a bright contrast to the depth of the wine and brandy.
The drink offers a balance of tartness from the lemon and orange with the sweetness from the strawberries and sugar. The alcohol from red wine and brandy gives it warmth and complexity. The soda enhances its refreshing bubbles, making it an enjoyable option for gatherings or outdoor enjoyment.
This recipe is adaptable: you can vary the fruit according to season or what you have on hand, including pineapple, pears, or peaches. Although a red wine is typical, substitutions with white or rosé wine can change the profile. Brandy can also be swapped for cognac or gin based on personal preference.
Ingredients
- 750 milliliters red wine (1 bottle)
- ½ cup brandy
- ½ cup orange juice
- ½ cup triple sec
- 1 orange sliced
- 1 lemon sliced
- 2 Tablespoons sugar optional
- 1 cup strawberries hulled and sliced
- 2 cup lemon-lime soda
Instructions
- In a large pitcher add wine, brandy, orange juice, triple sec and sugar; stir until combined and sugar is dissolved. Add lemons and chopped strawberries, stir. Put in fridge for at least 30 minutes or up to 8 hours.
- Add lemon lime soda before serving if desired.
Notes
- You can customize this sangria with many types of fresh or frozen fruit, such as pineapple, pears, or peaches, to suit availability and taste preferences.
- Allow the mixture to chill for at least 30 minutes and up to 8 hours to let the flavors meld before adding soda and serving.
- Though red wine is traditional, white or rosé wines can be used as alternatives for a different flavor.
- Brandy may be substituted with cognac, gin, or other spirits depending on your taste and inventory.
