Red White and Blue Jello Shots
Description
This recipe builds a festive treat by preparing three separate gelatin layers. The blue and red layers use colored gelatin mixes combined with boiling water, cold water, and vodka, poured into shot cups and chilled. The white layer mixes unflavored gelatin with cold water and melted gelatin, plus sweetened condensed milk, producing a creamy intermediate layer rich in texture. Each layer is chilled until firm before adding the next to preserve clean lines.
The shots are assembled in small cups, making them versatile party treats. The combination of vodka with gelatin yields a jiggly but firm consistency. Adding whipped cream and red, white, and blue sprinkles at the time of serving enhances texture and presentation.
Making sure each layer is fully set before layering is important to prevent colors from blending. Variations in red gelatin flavor are suggested, with strawberry preferred but cherry or others acceptable depending on taste.
Ingredients
For the blue layer
- 3 ounce box gelatin dessert blue color
- 1½ cups water divided use
- ½ cup vodka
For the white layer
- 2 packets gelatin 25 ounce size packets, unflavored
- 2 cups water cold
- 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
For the red layer
- 3 ounce box red gelatin dessert
- 1½ cups water divided use
- ½ cup vodka
For garnish
- 1½ cups Whipped Cream or whipped topping
- ½ cup Sprinkles red, white and blue
Instructions
For the blue layer
- Heat one cup of water until it's boiling.
- Pour the boiling water into a bowl containing your blue Jello powder and whisk the mixture until the powder is completely dissolved.
- Pour in 1/2 cup cold water and whisk until combined.
- Pour in the vodka and whisk until thoroughly blended. Divide the Jello mixture evenly among 22 two-ounce shot cups, then chill for at least one hour.
For the white layer
- Place the cold water in a pan and sprinkle the gelatin over it. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes.
- Transfer the pan to the stove and cook on low heat for 4-5 minutes until gelatin has melted.
- Remove the mixture from the heat, then whisk in the condensed milk.
- Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes, then add a layer of white Jello on top of the blue Jello. You may have some white gelatin leftover, which you can pour into a bowl and chill separately for a snack!
- Chill for at least one hour.
For the red layer
- Heat one cup of water until it's boiling.
- Pour the boiling water into a bowl containing your red Jello powder and whisk the mixture until the powder is completely dissolved.
- Pour in 1/2 cup cold water and whisk until combined.
- Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes. Add a layer of red jello on top of the white jello in each cup. Chill for at least one hour, or until all layers are set.
For garnish
- Pipe or dollop a tablespoon of whipped cream onto each shot. Add some red white and blue sprinkles, then serve immediately.
Notes
- Allow each gelatin layer to fully set before adding the next to keep layers distinct.
- Add whipped cream and sprinkles only just before serving to maintain texture and appearance.
- Strawberry flavor is preferred for the red layer, but cherry or other red gelatin flavors can be used instead.
