Red White and Blue Sangria

This Red White and Blue Sangria combines dry white wine and calvados with fresh apples, blueberries, and watermelon cut into star shapes for a festive drink. The addition of a honey simple syrup brings subtle sweetness, while the sparkling water adds effervescence just before serving. The chilled fruit infuses the beverage with natural flavors, making it visually appealing as well as refreshing.

Description

The Red White and Blue Sangria blends a bottled dry white wine such as sauvignon blanc with apple brandy (calvados), fresh green apples, blueberries, and watermelon slices shaped like stars. Honey and water are cooked together to create a simple syrup that sweetens the mix. After combining the spirits, syrup, and wine in a pitcher, star-shaped pieces of fruit are added and the sangria is refrigerated for several hours to meld flavors and chill. Sparkling water and star-shaped ice cubes are added at serving to introduce carbonation and maintain the cold temperature.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 ml bottle dry white wine sauvignon blanc or other
  • ½ cup calvados or other apple brandy
  • 2 green apples
  • 1 ½ cups blueberries
  • 6-7 lices watermelon cut into 1/2" slices
  • 2 cups club soda or sparkling water

Instructions

  1. If you have the star ice cube molds, fill them with water and freeze until you have about 3 cups of star shaped ice cubes.
  2. In a small saucepan combine the honey and water over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly until mixture becomes a honey simple syrup. Remove from heat to cool.
  3. Add the calvados, honey simple syrup and bottle of wine to a large pitcher.

Prepare the fruit:

  1. Slice the apple into 1/4" thin slices. Use the star cutter to press out stars in the apple flesh until you have about 1 cup of apple stars. Add the stars to the sangria.
  2. Use the star cutter to press out stars in the watermelon slices and add them to the sangria.  Add the blueberries to the sangria, stir and refrigerate for 3 hours or until very cold.

To Serve:

  1. Add the sparkling water to the pitcher along with the star shaped ice cubes and serve.
