Red Wine Steak Marinade
Description
This marinade combines red wine, olive oil, salt, black pepper, minced garlic, and dried rosemary to create a flavorful liquid for soaking steaks such as sirloin, ribeye, or New York strip. The steaks sit in a sealed bag with the marinade for at least two hours, or overnight for deeper flavor penetration.
Grilling over medium-high heat caramelizes the surface while cooking the interior to the desired temperature, which can be monitored with a thermometer. Resting the meat after grilling allows juices to redistribute, ensuring a juicy bite.
The red wine contributes acidity and fruitiness that pairs well with the herbal and garlic notes, while the olive oil maintains moisture during cooking. This marinade suits a variety of grilling occasions and steak cuts, providing a balanced taste profile.
Using an instant-read thermometer inserted from the side helps gauge doneness accurately, from rare (120°F) to well done (160°F), allowing cooks to tailor steaks precisely. Marinate for longer if time permits, and bring steaks to room temperature prior to grilling for even cooking.
Ingredients
- 4 steaks cut of your choice - sirloin, ribeye or new york strip
- 1 cup red wine
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 teaspoons garlic minced
- 2 teaspoons rosemary dried
Instructions
- Mix together all the marinade ingredients in a small bowl. Place the steaks in a large zip lock bag. Pour the marinade on top of the bag. Get as much air out of the bag as possible and seal. Let the steaks marinade for at least 2 hours or up to overnight.
- Preheat the grill over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F). Let the steaks sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling.
- Place steaks on a hot grill and cook for 3 to 5 minutes depending on your Steak Doneness preference.
- Flip the steak over and grill for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until steak is cooked to your preference.
- Remove from the grill and allow to rest a minimum of 5 minutes before cutting or serving.
Notes
- Measure steak doneness with an instant-read thermometer inserted through the side for accuracy.
- Recommended steak temperatures range from 120°F for rare up to 160°F for well done.
- Marinate steaks for at least 2 hours and up to overnight to maximize flavor infusion.
- Let steaks sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before grilling to aid in even cooking.
