Refreshing Blueberry Lemonade
Description
This blueberry lemonade recipe begins by making a blueberry simple syrup, where equal parts sugar and water are heated with fresh blueberries until the sugar dissolves and the berries release their juice. The syrup is strained to remove solids, resulting in a vividly colored, flavorful base. When chilled, the syrup is combined with freshly squeezed lemon juice and served over plenty of ice.
The balanced sweetness of the syrup complements the tartness of the lemon, while the fresh blueberries and lemon wedges garnish the drink for visual appeal and bursts of added flavor. Optional fresh mint or basil leaves can be muddled in for an herbal note. The preparation yields a refreshing and hydrating beverage with a slight fruity complexity.
Cooking the blueberries extracts more color and flavor than a raw puree, and chilling the syrup before mixing enhances the coolness of the drink. For an adult variation, vodka or tequila can be added. Adjust sweetness by varying sugar or substituting it with alternatives like stevia.
