Refried Bean Burritos (Camp Stove Recipe)

Refried Bean Burritos combine warm refried beans mixed with sautéed onions and spices, wrapped inside toasted flour tortillas. The filling melds savory and mildly spiced flavors with creamy beans and tender onions. Optional toppings like queso fresco, salsa, and cilantro add fresh, tangy, or spicy accents. These burritos offer a filling, meatless meal made conveniently on a camp stove or stovetop.

Description

This recipe starts by sautéing diced onions with chili powder and salt until lightly browned, contributing a gentle sweetness and warmth. These cooked onions are then mixed with canned refried beans and diced tomatoes with green chilies to form a flavorful filling. Heating it together allows the flavors to meld and the beans to warm thoroughly.

Flour tortillas are warmed briefly in a clean pan until pliable, making them easier to roll without cracking. The bean filling is spooned onto each tortilla, which is then rolled tightly to enclose the mixture. Additional toasting in the pan crisps the outside slightly, adding texture.

The burritos serve well immediately, accompanied by optional toppings such as hot sauce, queso fresco, salsa, diced tomatoes, or cilantro, letting each eater customize their flavor. Leftover beans can also function as a dip alongside tortilla chips.

The recipe yields 6-8 burritos depending on filling amount and tortilla size, providing a practical meatless option suitable for camping or everyday meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder Or sub ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon salt sea salt
  • 15 ounce refried beans canned
  • 15 ounce diced tomatoes with green chilies, canned, liquid drained
  • 6 flour tortillas 8-inch

Optional Toppings:

  • hot sauce
  • queso fresco or pepper jack or your favorite, grated
  • salsa
  • diced tomatoes
  • cilantro

Instructions

  1. Add oil to a pan over medium heat. Add the onion, salt, and chili powder, and cook 3-4 minutes or until onions begin to brown. Remove from heat.
  2. Add the onions, beans, and tomatoes to a medium saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring often. When the beans are warm, turn off the heat.
  3. Wipe out the onion pan. Add a tortilla, and heat over medium heat until it begins to bubble up, about 30 seconds. Use metal tongs to flip it and cook the other side.Scoop beans into the tortilla, and roll to make a burrito. Set aside (off-heat) and repeat with the remaining beans and tortillas. Make sure to fill and roll each tortilla right after cooking. Once the tortilla cools, it will be much harder to roll it without cracking. If you have leftover beans, they can be used as a dip with chips and salsa.
  4. Place the burritos back in the pan and toast on both sides for about 30 seconds.Serve right away, along with your desired toppings (optional).

Notes

  • This recipe yields 6-8 burritos depending on filling amount and tortilla size.
  • Use freshly warmed tortillas to prevent cracking when rolling the burritos.
  • Leftover beans make a good dip option served with chips and salsa.
