Restaurant-Style Mexican Black Beans
Description
This recipe begins by heating vegetable oil and cooking diced onions until soft and translucent. Garlic, ground cumin, and optional cayenne pepper are then sautéed briefly to release their aromas. Canned black beans, undrained, are added along with their liquid, then simmered to blend flavors and tenderize beans.
The resulting bean dish balances the sweetness of sautéed onions with the earthiness of cumin and the subtle heat of cayenne if used. Fresh cilantro added before serving brings herbal freshness that complements the dense beans.
The beans make a versatile side dish suited to tacos, rice, or as a component in Mexican meals. Serving hot ensures the flavors are well melded and the beans have a creamy consistency.
For a more authentic texture and flavor, the notes suggest incorporating lard, shortening, or butter which enriches the beans, making them closer to those served in Mexican restaurants.
