Roast Beef Horseradish Cheddar Sliders
Description
Roast Beef Horseradish Cheddar Sliders feature layers of thinly sliced roast beef and cheddar cheese infused with horseradish, assembled on soft King's Hawaiian rolls. The key component is the caramelized yellow onion, cooked slowly with butter and brown sugar until tender and flavorful. This mixture is added between layers of meat and cheese before baking, which melts the cheese thoroughly and toasts the tops of the rolls with a butter glaze and optional oregano. The sandwiches come out warm with a rich combination of creamy, sharp, sweet, and savory flavors.
Cooking the onions slowly brings out natural sweetness, which balances the tang of horseradish in the cheddar cheese. The rolls stay soft inside while gaining a slight crispness on top. These sliders work well for casual occasions or quick meals where the flavorful components come together in an easy-to-serve format.
To adapt if horseradish cheddar is unavailable, consider spreading horseradish sauce on the rolls and using plain cheddar. Oregano is optional and mainly adds aroma and color when sprinkled before baking.
Ingredients
- 1 yellow onion peeled & thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter divided
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 12 King's Hawaiian Rolls
- 12 lices cheddar cheese see note, with horseradish
- 12 lices roast beef deli style
- ¼ teaspoon oregano optional, dried
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
- Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat
- Add the onion, brown sugar, and salt to the skillet. Stir and cook until softened about, 5 to 10 minutes. Remove to onions to a bowl and set them aside for now.
- Cut the Hawaiian rolls in half so you have tops and bottoms. (It's easier if you don't pull them apart.) Place the bottom of the rolls in a baking dish.
- Lay 6 slices of cheese over the roll bottoms so they're completely covered.
- Place 1 slice of roast beef on each roll, you will have to bunch it up to make it fit. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the onions onto each roast beef slice.
- Lay the remaining 6 slices of cheese over the top of the onions. Place the tops of the roll on top of the cheese.
- Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and then brush over the tops of the rolls. Sprinkle the rolls with oregano if desired.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is melty and the tops of the roll have browned.
- Remove from the oven and cut the sliders apart before serving warm.
Notes
- If horseradish cheddar cheese is unavailable, spread creamy horseradish on the rolls and use plain cheddar cheese instead.
