Roast Beef Sliders
Description
This slider recipe begins by slicing sweet Hawaiian rolls horizontally without separating into individual buns and placing the bottom half in a pan. A layer of horseradish sauce is spread to impart tang and moisture, then topped with thin roast beef slices, followed by a mix of mozzarella, pepper jack, and cheddar cheeses for a rich, melty texture. The top halves are spread with remaining horseradish sauce and placed on top.
A sauce made from melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, dried mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and poppy seeds is whisked and poured over the assembled sliders. The dish is covered and chilled for several hours or overnight to let flavors meld before baking at 350°F until the cheese melts thoroughly. Covering the dish during part of baking helps prevent over-browning while still melting the cheese.
Once baked and sliced, the sliders combine sweet bread, savory roast beef and cheese, and sharp horseradish heat balanced by the buttery sauce. They work well as an appetizer or main course for informal gatherings.
Leftovers keep for up to three days refrigerated and reheat well in the oven or microwave. Optional additions like roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, or pepperoncini can be layered for different flavor notes.
Ingredients
Assembly
- 20 hawaiian rolls sweet
- 40 roast beef about 1 1/2 pounds, thin slices
- 8 ounces mozzarella cheese shredded
- 8 ounces pepper jack cheese shredded
- 8 ounces cheddar cheese shredded
- 6 ounces horseradish sauce
Sauce
- 1 cup butter melted, salted
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons dried mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 Tablespoons poppy seeds
Instructions
- Slice the rolls in half lengthwise without separating them, then lay the bottom half in a 9x13-inch pan.
- Spread half of the horseradish sauce in a thin layer on the roll, then top with the sliced roast beef.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top, then spread the undersides of the cut top rolls with the remaining horseradish sauce and place them on top of the cheese.
- In a small bowl, whisk the melted butter with the Worcestershire sauce, dried mustard, garlic powder, and onion powder. Drizzle all over the tops of the rolls, then sprinkle with the poppy seeds. Cover with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, then uncover and bake the sliders for 20-30 minutes until the cheese is melted. You may need to cover them with foil during the last 10 minutes or so. Slice between the rolls then serve warm.
Notes
- Store leftover sliders covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in oven at 350°F or briefly in the microwave.
- Add mix-ins such as roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, or pepperoncini peppers between roast beef and cheese for extra flavor variety.
