Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Roasted Brussels Sprouts are halved and tossed with olive oil, salt, and pepper then baked at high heat until browned and tender. The roasting develops a slightly crispy exterior with a soft inside while enhancing the sprouts' natural sweetness. Turning cut sides down helps caramelize. This simple preparation suits a flavorful side dish for many meals.

Description

This recipe for Roasted Brussels Sprouts starts by trimming and halving the sprouts, removing outer leaves and tough ends. They are tossed with olive oil and seasoned with salt and black pepper before being spread cut side down on a baking sheet. The oven is set to a high 425 degrees Fahrenheit to encourage browning and caramelization in about 20-25 minutes. Additional turning and baking can deepen the color and tenderness according to preference.

Roasting at high heat transforms the Brussels sprouts from a firm, slightly bitter vegetable to a tender yet crisp dish with browned edges and a sweeter, nutty flavor. The olive oil adds richness and aids in browning, while salt and pepper enhance the natural vegetable taste.

These roasted sprouts can be served as a warm side for poultry, pork, or beef or added to bowls and salads. They pair well with acidic or creamy dressings for balance and can be customized with additional spices or toppings in other applications.
