Root Beer Glazed Ham
Description
The Root Beer Glazed Ham begins with a combination of root beer, brown sugar, ketchup, and Dijon mustard cooked over medium heat until the liquid reduces by half, concentrating the glaze’s sweetness and tang. The ham is prepared by scoring the fat layer if desired to allow better glaze penetration and placed in a baking dish.
The ham is baked at a moderate temperature of 325°F, covered with foil to retain moisture. It is basted with one-fourth of the glaze every 15 minutes, a total of four times, building layers of flavor. Removing the foil for the final 20 to 30 minutes allows caramelization, thickening the glaze on the ham’s surface.
The internal temperature is monitored until it reaches 145°F for safe consumption. The result is a ham with a glossy, sticky root beer glaze offering a blend of sugary, tangy, and smoky flavors that enhance the natural cured characteristics of the smoked ham.
Ingredients
- 2 cups root beer
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1 smoked ham Jones Dairy Farm brand, whole family, 5 lb
Instructions
- Combine the root beer, brown sugar, ketchup and mustard in a pan and cook over medium heat until reduced to half.
- Preheat the oven to 325°F. If desired, score the fat layer on the ham. Place the ham in a baking dish and baste with one-fourth of the reduced root beer mixture. Cover with foil and place in the oven. Bake for 15 minutes, then baste with another fourth of the root beer mixture. Repeat two more times. Remove the foil, baste the ham with the pan juices and cook for an additional 20-30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F.
