Rose Syrup

Rose Syrup is a fragrant, sweet liquid made by simmering sugar with water and infused with rose petals or rose water. This syrup carries delicate floral notes and a natural pink hue when optionally colored, ideal for adding aroma and sweetness to drinks or desserts.

Description

The Rose Syrup recipe involves boiling granulated sugar and water together with edible fresh or dried rose petals or buds to extract floral flavors. The mixture simmers for 10 minutes to infuse the rose essence, then is strained to remove the petals. Alternatively, rose water is stirred in after cooking for a more concentrated flavor. Natural food coloring can be added for visual effect but is optional.

The resulting syrup is lightly sweet with aromatic rose characteristics, providing a subtle floral flavor that enhances beverages, cocktails, or desserts. Its texture is similar to a simple syrup, making it easy to mix and pour.

Store the syrup refrigerated for up to four weeks in a sealed container. Adjust the rose water to your taste if a stronger flavor is desired after cooling. You can experiment with different types of roses such as fresh petals, dried petals, or dried buds for varied flavor and aroma profiles.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ½ cups sugar granulated white
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ teaspoon rose water (or ½ a cup edible dried or fresh rose petals or buds)
  • food colouring natural red/pink, optional

Instructions

  1. Stir the sugar, water and rose petals (if using rose water, add later) in a pot, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Remove from the heat, place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl and strain out and discard the rose petals. (If using rose extract, stir it in now.)
  3. Allow to cool. Taste, and if you like it stronger, stir in a little more rose water.
  4. Pour into a jar or bottle and keep in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.

Notes

  • For infusion, use ½ cup of edible, chemical-free fresh rose petals, dried rose petals, or dried rose buds when simmering.
  • Add rose water after cooking once syrup has cooled to adjust floral strength without bitterness.
  • Store syrup in the refrigerator for up to four weeks in a sealed container.
