Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ounce dark rum
  • 1 ounce rum light
  • 0.5 ounce blackberry liqueur
  • 0.5 ounce banana liqueur
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • 1 ounce pineapple juice
  • 0.5 ounce grenadine
  • ice crushed
  • Fruit e.g. orange slice, pineapple wedge, or cherry, for garnish, optional

Instructions

  1. Mix together the light and dark rum, banana and blackberry liqueur, orange and pineapple juice, and grenadine in a mixing glass (or a cocktail shaker).
  2. Add some ice mixing glass, and stir (or shake) it thoroughly until it's well blended and chilled.
  3. Fill a tall glass with crushed ice, strain the cocktail mix into the glass. Add more ice if needed. Garnish with some fruit, like an orange slice, pineapple chunk, or cherry.

Notes

  • It's true what they say: "You are what you eat (and drink)." With that in mind, go for quality rum and liqueurs and use freshly squeezed fruit juices. The better the ingredients, the better the cocktail.
  • There are so many different types of rum out there, from white to aged to flavored. Each has its own character so why not experiment and see which ones you prefer in your Rum Runner.
  • A Rum Runner, like most tropical cocktails, is best when it's ice-cold. Chill the glass, juices, and even the rum before use. When everything is cold, the ice will stay frozen longer and won't dilute your drink.
  • Shake the mixture for a good 20 seconds before pouring. You have a lot of ingredients in there; you'll want to make sure they've combined sufficiently before serving. It also chills them (see the previous point).
  • A tropical cocktail is pretty much naked without a garnish. Not to sound like a prude but get some clothes on it! Add the classic orange slice, pineapple chunk, or cherry, THEN maybe complement the look with an umbrella, a tropical flower, or even a tiny plastic flamingo.
