Salmon Patties

Salmon patties combine cooked salmon with mustard, mayonnaise, breadcrumbs, and fresh herbs to form flavorful patties that are pan-fried until golden and crispy. The mixture's texture balances moisture from the mayo and egg with the binder role of breadcrumbs, producing tender yet firm patties. They offer a versatile way to use boneless salmon chunks and can be served with lemon wedges and tartar sauce to enhance their mild, savory flavor.

Description

Salmon Patties feature a blend of cooked salmon, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, onion, and herbs bound by egg and breadcrumbs. The patties are gently formed and cooked in olive oil until both sides develop a golden-brown crust, which helps seal in moisture and provides a pleasant crispness. The recipe's seasoning with garlic powder, lemon juice, and parsley adds brightness and depth to the fish, making the patties savory with subtle herbal notes.

The finished salmon patties can be served warm with lemon wedges and tartar sauce, which complement the richness of the salmon and add a fresh, tangy contrast. They work well as a main dish with sides or as a sandwich filling.

To keep patties from falling apart during cooking, ensure the pan is properly heated and cook them long enough on the first side to develop a firm, browned crust before flipping. Fresh ingredients improve flavor, and gluten-free breadcrumbs can be used to accommodate dietary needs. Variations using other seafood like tuna, cod, or lump crab meat are also possible.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb salmon or 15 oz canned boneless salmon, cut in small chunks, cooked
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 Tablespoon mayonnaise
  • ½ cup onion grated
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 Tablespoon parsley fresh chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice juice of half lemon
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1-2 Tablespoon olive oil
  • lemon wedges

Instructions

  1. Mix cooked salmon, egg, mustard, mayo, onion, breadcrumbs, parsley, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt and black pepper in a large mixing bowl. Using a ¼ cup measuring cup, portion the salmon mixture and form them into 8 evenly sized patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add salmon patties to the skillet and cook them in batches for about 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown. Using a fish spatula carefully lift each patty and flip it over. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Transfer the cooked salmon patties to a plate lined with a paper towel.
  3. Serve them with tartar sauce and lemon wedges for squeezing.

Notes

  • Use fresh salmon and herbs for better flavor in the patties.
  • Cook in a preheated pan at medium heat to avoid burning while ensuring thorough cooking.
  • Use a fish spatula and support the top gently with fingers when flipping to prevent breaking the patties.
  • Gluten-free breadcrumbs can be substituted to make the patties gluten-free.
  • Do not overcook; aim for golden brown on each side with a tender interior.
  • Other seafood such as canned tuna, cod, or crab meat can replace salmon for variations.
