Sausage and Egg Croissant Breakfast Casserole
Description
The recipe begins by browning pork sausage and sautéing chopped onions for savory depth. Meanwhile, eggs are whisked with milk, ground mustard, dried thyme, brown sugar, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and sliced green onions to create a flavorful custard base. Cubed croissants are folded into this mixture, absorbing the custard and adding a tender bread layer. Cheddar cheese and the sausage mixture are then gently stirred in, distributing flavor and richness throughout.
The casserole is baked covered initially to set the custard without drying, then uncovered to brown and develop a light crust. This process yields a dish with creamy texture contrasted by bits of browned sausage and melted cheese, accented by aromatic herbs and spices.
Ideal for feeding a group, this casserole offers a balanced mix of protein, bread, and seasoning that holds well for leftovers. Serving after a brief rest allows the custard to firm and flavors to meld.
