Sausage Balls
Description
This Sausage Balls recipe combines Bisquick baking mix with ground pork sausage and shredded cheddar cheese, enhanced by garlic powder and optional cayenne for mild heat. If the mixture is too crumbly, a small amount of milk can be added to achieve better cohesion. The dough is formed into 1¼ to 1½ tablespoon-sized balls and baked at 350°F until lightly browned, creating a crisp shell around a moist, cheesy interior with a hearty sausage flavor.
The balance of sausage, cheese, and baking mix yields a rich, savory bite, appropriate for snacking or serving at gatherings. The use of mild or hot sausage allows customization of spice level, while homemade shredded cheese is suggested for better texture compared to pre-shredded options. Mixing by hand or a low-speed stand mixer encourages even distribution of ingredients without overworking the dough.
Careful measuring of Bisquick helps prevent dryness. The balls are spaced about an inch apart on the baking sheet to allow even heat circulation. The recipe's flexibility in spice and texture makes it an adaptable snack or appetizer choice.
Ingredients
- 2.5 cups Bisquick Mix
- 1 pound pork sausage mild or hot
- 16 ounces cheddar cheese shredded
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
- ¼ cup milk optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or light grease with oil
- In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients and mix well with hand.
- Scoop approximately 1 ¼ - 1 ½ tablespoon of mixture and roll into balls. Dough will be thick. If it's too crumbly, add the ¼ cup of milk.
- Place them on the baking sheet about 1 inch apart
- Bake for 20 minutes or until they turn lightly brown.
Notes
- Measure Bisquick by spooning into a cup and leveling to avoid using too much and drying the dough.
- Add up to ¼ cup milk if the dough feels too crumbly for forming balls.
- Select mild or hot sausage according to desired spice, and omit cayenne if using hot sausage.
- Consider shredding your own cheese for improved texture over pre-shredded varieties.
- Mix ingredients by hand or on low speed with a stand mixer to combine evenly without overmixing.
- Press dough gently when rolling into balls, as the mixture can be slightly crumbly.
