Sausage Breakfast Pie
Description
This Sausage Breakfast Pie begins with a traditional unbaked pie shell that forms a crisp crust when baked. Cooked breakfast sausage is layered over half of the shredded cheddar cheese in the crust, then topped with the remaining cheese. A mixture of beaten eggs, whole milk, salt, and pepper is poured over the filling, creating a custard that sets during baking. The pie is baked at 375°F until the center is firm and a knife inserted comes out clean, typically about 30-35 minutes.
The pie produces a balanced texture where the seasoned sausage adds savory flavor and slight chew, cheddar contributes melty richness, and the custard provides a soft and creamy binding. The crust holds the filling crisp and intact.
This dish is served warm and cut into eight slices, making it a practical and satisfying option for group breakfasts or brunches. Pair it with fruit or a simple salad for a complete meal.
Drain excess fat from the sausage after browning to prevent greasiness. Ensure the custard is evenly poured and baked thoroughly to create a stable pie that slices well.
