Sausage Dip
Description
Sausage Dip is prepared by browning crumbled sausage, which forms a savory meaty base. The cooked sausage combines with softened cream cheese, contributing a creamy richness that balances the meat, and picante sauce, which adds acidity and mild heat. These ingredients heat through until blended, forming a smooth, flavorful dip with a slightly chunky texture from the meat.
The dip's flavor depends heavily on the choice of sausage and picante sauce; using hot sausage and spicy picante can increase the heat level. This dip is quick to warm and serve, requiring minimal active preparation. It is commonly served with tortilla chips, pretzel crisps, crackers, or vegetable sticks, accommodating various tastes and textures.
It can be prepared on the stovetop, in the microwave, or in a slow cooker to keep warm during serving. Leftovers store well in the refrigerator and can be frozen for longer storage, making this dip suitable for make-ahead preparation. Gradual reheating in short intervals preserves its creamy consistency without overheating.
Ingredients
- 32 ounces regular sausage Bob Evans, Jimmy Dean, whatever your favorite brand is, in rolls
- 16 ounces cream cheese softened, in packages
- 28 ounces picante sauce
Instructions
- Brown the sausage, breaking it up and crumbling it as it cooks. Once cooked through, remove from skillet with a slotted spoon and place in serving bowl. Mix in the cream cheese and picante sauce.
- Microwave in 30 seconds increments, stirring between each, until the dip is heated through and the cream cheese is melted.
- Serve with your favorite tortilla chips, pretzel crisps or crackers.
Notes
- Use your preferred brand of sausage without draining the picante sauce for authentic flavor.
- To increase spiciness, substitute regular sausage with hot sausage or choose a spicy picante sauce, or add hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
- For stovetop preparation, cook and drain sausage, then combine with cream cheese and picante sauce over medium-low heat until melted.
- In a crockpot, cook sausage and drain, then combine with cream cheese and picante and warm on low, stirring occasionally.
- Serve with chips, crackers, bread, or vegetables; using a microwave-safe dish allows easy reheating.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 5 days; freeze up to 3 months.
- Reheat microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring between heating.
