Sausage, Gouda & Biscuit Breakfast Casserole
Description
The casserole begins with cooking the maple sausage until browned, which adds a sweet-savory flavor. Quartered biscuit dough is spread in the baking pan, forming a doughy base. The cooked sausage is layered on top. A mixture of eggs, milk, ground mustard, and cheese is whisked together and poured over the biscuit and sausage layers, with extra cheese sprinkled on top.
Baking at 350°F for about 30-35 minutes sets the egg custard and allows the biscuits to rise and bake through, creating a tender, slightly golden crust. The interplay of sweet sausage, smoky Gouda, and soft biscuit texture builds a satisfying flavor and mouthfeel suitable for breakfast or brunch.
The casserole can be assembled the night before and refrigerated to bake fresh in the morning, making it convenient for preparing in advance. Cooling slightly before serving helps it hold together for easier slicing.
