Filling

  • 1 Puff pastry sheets brand Pepperidge Farm, box
  • 1 lb sausage ground, brand Jimmy Dean's
  • 1 carrot shredded
  • 1 onion diced finely
  • ¾ cup Italian bread crumbs
  • cup milk
  • 2 tsp garlic minced
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 2 tbsp barbecue sauce

Finishing

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water
  • paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 
  2. Combine all of the filling ingredients in one bowl.
  3. Thaw and roll out the two puff pastry sheets. Cut a line down the middle of each one. 
  4. Lay the filling in a straight line down the center of each puff pastry slip.
  5. Fold the two vertical edges of each sheet over the center filling and pinch to hold. Turn the rolls over so the pinched edge is on the parchment paper.
  6. Cut each strip into four pieces each and slice each top with a knife, diagonally twice. Brush top with egg wash and sprinkle with paprika. 
  7. Bake at 425 for 5 minutes, reduce heat to 350 and bake for 35 more.
  8. Serve with barbecue sauce or ketchup!

Notes

  • Use fresh puff pastry and handle it gently to maintain flakiness.
  • The initial high heat start helps seal the pastry and begin browning before lowering temperature for thorough cooking.
  • Diagonal slashes in the pastry allow steam to escape and prevent sogginess inside.
