Sausage Roll Recipe
Description
The recipe uses puff pastry sheets cut and filled with a mixture of ground sausage, finely diced onion, shredded carrot, Italian bread crumbs, milk, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and barbecue sauce. The filling is arranged in lines down each sheet, which are then folded and pinched to enclose the sausage mixture. After cutting into pieces and making diagonal slashes on top, the rolls are brushed with an egg wash flavored with water and paprika for a golden appearance.
Baked first at a high temperature (425°F) for 5 minutes, then lowered to 350°F for an additional 35 minutes, this method ensures a flaky crust and fully cooked filling. The rolls can be served warm with barbecue sauce or ketchup for dipping, making them a versatile finger food for parties or casual meals.
The recipe is credited to Alexandria Drzazgowski of The Foreign Fork and intended for educational or personal use.
Ingredients
Filling
- 1 Puff pastry sheets brand Pepperidge Farm, box
- 1 lb sausage ground, brand Jimmy Dean's
- 1 carrot shredded
- 1 onion diced finely
- ¾ cup Italian bread crumbs
- ⅓ cup milk
- 2 tsp garlic minced
- salt
- black pepper
- 2 tbsp barbecue sauce
Finishing
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp water
- paprika
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine all of the filling ingredients in one bowl.
- Thaw and roll out the two puff pastry sheets. Cut a line down the middle of each one.
- Lay the filling in a straight line down the center of each puff pastry slip.
- Fold the two vertical edges of each sheet over the center filling and pinch to hold. Turn the rolls over so the pinched edge is on the parchment paper.
- Cut each strip into four pieces each and slice each top with a knife, diagonally twice. Brush top with egg wash and sprinkle with paprika.
- Bake at 425 for 5 minutes, reduce heat to 350 and bake for 35 more.
- Serve with barbecue sauce or ketchup!
Notes
- Use fresh puff pastry and handle it gently to maintain flakiness.
- The initial high heat start helps seal the pastry and begin browning before lowering temperature for thorough cooking.
- Diagonal slashes in the pastry allow steam to escape and prevent sogginess inside.
- Serve warm with barbecue sauce or ketchup as a dip for better flavor pairing.
