Sautéed Beef, Cabbage, and Rice

Sautéed Beef, Cabbage, and Rice is a skillet dish that pairs browned ground beef and sweet, tender cabbage with cooked rice. The beef is seasoned with steak seasoning, while soy sauce adds a subtle umami finish. Butter enriches the mixture, giving it a comforting texture and flavor. This dish works well for using cooked rice leftovers and creates a satisfying one-pan meal with balanced protein, vegetables, and starch.

Description

This recipe starts by sautéing diced yellow onion in oil until soft, then adding ground beef combined with steak seasoning and cooking it thoroughly, draining excess fat if needed. Chopped green cabbage and water are then added and cooked until the cabbage softens to preference. Finally, cooked rice and butter are folded in and heated through. Soy sauce is added last for seasoning, providing salty depth.

The result is a warm, filling dish marrying the savory beef with the mild sweetness of the cabbage and the buttery rice. The cooking method ensures the cabbage retains some texture but becomes tender, while the soy sauce seasoning ties flavors together harmoniously. This combination is practical for weekday dinners and cleanup is minimal.

Best served directly from the skillet, this dish is suitable as a main meal pairing with simple sides or as a standalone option. The ingredients are affordable and accessible, making it useful for cooking on a budget or repurposing leftover rice.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 yellow onion $0.32
  • 1/2 head green cabbage $1.08, 5 cups chopped
  • 1 Tbsp neutral cooking oil $0.04, generic cooking oil
  • 1/2 lb. ground beef $3.50
  • 1 Tbsp steak seasoning $0.30
  • 1/4 cup water $0.00
  • 2 cups rice $0.41, cooked
  • 2 Tbsp butter $0.41
  • 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce $0.03

Instructions

  1. Dice the onion and chop the cabbage into ½-inch pieces.
  2. Add the onion and cooking oil to a large skillet and sauté over medium heat until the onions are soft.
  3. Add the ground beef and steak seasoning to the skillet and continue to sauté until the beef is fully cooked. If using a higher fat content beef, drain the excess fat from the skillet.
  4. Add the chopped cabbage and water to the skillet. Continue to sauté until the cabbage has softened to your desired level of tenderness.
  5. Add the cooked rice and butter to the skillet. Fold the rice and butter into the beef and cabbage until the butter has melted, everything is evenly combined, and the rice is heated through.
  6. Finally, season the skillet with soy sauce to taste. Start with 1 tsp and add more to your liking (I added ½ Tbsp, or 1.5 tsp). Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Using day-old or fully cooled rice improves texture and prevents clumping in the final dish.
