Description
Sauteed Brussels Sprouts are prepared by melting butter in a pan and browning halved Brussels sprouts over medium-high heat. Garlic and Italian seasoning are added for aromatic flavor, while salt and pepper provide seasoning. Adding chicken or vegetable broth allows the sprouts to simmer and soften without drying out.
The method results in sprouts that have a browned exterior with a tender inside, achieved by first browning followed by simmering. The remaining liquid is drained off before finishing with a fresh herb garnish such as parsley, green onions, or dill, introducing a fresh herbal note to balance the richness of butter and seasoning.
These sprouts work well as a side dish alongside a range of main courses. Choosing similar-sized sprouts, preferably smaller for tenderness, helps achieve even cooking. For a vegan alternative, butter can be replaced with olive oil and chicken broth with vegetable broth.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 lb Brussels sprouts trimmed and halved
- 2 teaspoons garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning dried
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup chicken broth or vegetable broth
- 1 1/2 tablespoons parsley can also use green onions or fresh dill, chopped
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a large pan over medium high heat.
- Add the brussels sprouts and cook for 3-4 minutes or until browned.
- Stir in the garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and chicken broth. Bring to a simmer Cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sprouts are tender.
- Drain off any excess liquid. Sprinkle with parsley, then serve.
Notes
- Select Brussels sprouts that are uniform in size for even cooking, with smaller sprouts preferred for tenderness.
- Substitute butter with olive oil and chicken broth with vegetable broth to make the dish vegan-friendly.
