Sauteed Mushrooms and Onions

Sauteed Mushrooms and Onions features butter-cooked sliced onions and thick mushrooms, finished with garlic, Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh parsley. The onions caramelize gently while the mushrooms brown, creating a savory side with a mix of soft and tender textures. The addition of garlic and Worcestershire sauce deepens the umami notes, making this dish a versatile accompaniment to many meals.

Description

This recipe sautés sliced onions and mushrooms in butter over medium heat until the onions soften and start to brown and the mushrooms turn golden and tender. Garlic, dried Italian seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce add layers of flavor just before finishing. Fresh parsley is sprinkled at the end for a bright herbal note. Seasoning with salt and pepper enhances the natural flavors.

The dish can accompany meats, eggs, or grain dishes, offering a warm and earthy side. It utilizes common types of mushrooms like button or cremini, but other varieties such as shiitake or portobello also work.

Choosing sweeter onions like Vidalia adds extra mild sweetness, but standard yellow or red onions perform well too. This preparation method keeps the vegetables tender with nicely developed browning.

Servings
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup onion sliced
  • 1 pound mushrooms thickly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning dried
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon parsley chopped, fresh
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the onions and cook for 6-8 minutes, until onions are soft and beginning to brown.
  3. Add the mushrooms, then season generously with salt and pepper.

  5. Stir in the garlic, Italian seasoning and Worcestershire sauce, then cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  6. Sprinkle with parsley and serve immediately.

Notes
