Sautéed Spinach Recipe
Description
The process begins by heating oil in a skillet and gently cooking onion until translucent to build a mild, savory base. Minced garlic is added briefly for aroma. Baby spinach leaves are then incorporated in two stages to ensure even cooking without overcrowding the pan. The leaves soften and reduce in volume within a few minutes, seasoned simply with salt and fresh ground black pepper for balance.
Lightly sautéed spinach maintains a tender, slightly crisp texture preserved through brief cooking. The dish pairs well as a vegetable side for various meals, its mild flavor enhanced optionally with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for acidity and brightness.
To prepare ahead, spinach can be cooked and stored refrigerated in an airtight container for up to three days. It freezes well for up to three months in freezer-safe packaging, suitable for adding later to soups, stews, or dips. Reheat gently in a skillet or microwave, stirring occasionally to warm evenly without overcooking.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp. neutral cooking oil olive or avocado, generic cooking oil
- ¼ cup onion finely chopped
- 1-2 cloves garlic finely minced
- 8 oz. baby spinach leaves divided
- ¼ tsp. salt to taste
- ⅛ tsp. black pepper to taste
- lemon juice optional
Instructions
- Prepare the Spinach: Remove stems from spinach leaves and discard, if desired.
- Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add oil and onion to a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until the onion turns translucent. Add garlic and continue sauteing for an additional minute.
- Sauté Spinach in Batches: Stir in half of the spinach leaves and sauté for 2 minutes, or until it begins to wilt. Stir in the rest of the spinach, salt, and pepper and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes.
- Serve spinach immediately with a squeeze of lemon juice and enjoy!
Notes
- Sautéed spinach tastes best served immediately after cooking but can be stored refrigerated for up to 3 days.
- Freeze cooked spinach sealed in an airtight container for up to 3 months, ideal for later use in soups or dips.
- Reheat spinach gently over medium-low heat or in the microwave, stirring occasionally to evenly warm.
