Savory Sausage French Toast Bake

This Savory Sausage French Toast Bake combines browned pork sausage with a custard made of eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and cheddar cheese soaked into thick slices of French bread. The mixture is baked until set with a golden crust, creating a rich, hearty casserole that blends savory flavors and soft, custardy bread.

Description

The recipe starts by cooking ground pork sausage until browned and drained of excess fat. A custard mixture is prepared with large eggs, whole milk, kosher salt, coarsely ground black pepper, and shredded cheddar cheese, incorporating the cooked sausage. Thick slices of French bread are dipped into the custard to absorb the flavors and moisture, then arranged in a baking dish. The remaining custard is poured over the bread before baking uncovered.

Baking sets the custard and melds the flavors, producing a warm dish with a tender, custardy interior and a lightly browned top. The cheddar cheese adds a creamy sharpness balancing the savory sausage and bread.

This bake suits breakfast, brunch, or a comforting dinner. It can be served with fruit, salad, or other sides to complete the meal. The dish is straightforward but flavorful and filling, highlighting a classic pairing of sausage and cheese with French toast technique.
