Sazon Seasoning
Description
Sazon Seasoning combines a variety of dried spices including ground coriander, cumin, and achiote powder, which is derived from ground annatto seeds. The inclusion of Mexican oregano and dried cilantro adds herbal notes, while garlic and onion powders contribute savory depth. Salt and black pepper provide balance to the aroma and flavor. The ingredients are ground finely using a food processor or spice grinder to create a consistent blend. This spice mix can be stored airtight and used to season meats, rice, beans, and stews, lending a characteristic reddish hue and complex taste to Latin dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp ground coriander
- 1 tbsp cumin ground
- 1 tbsp achiote powder (See Note 1)
- 1 tbsp Mexican oregano (See Note 2)
- 1 tbsp cilantro dried
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp kosher salt
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp black pepper ground
Instructions
- In a spice grinder or food processor add the ground coriander, cumin, achiote, oregano, cilantro, garlic and onion powders, kosher salt and pepper and pulse until a fine grind. Store in an airtight container.
Notes
- Achiote powder is made from ground annatto seeds, adding color and mild earthiness.
- Mexican oregano offers a distinct flavor; regular oregano can be substituted if unavailable.
- This recipe yields about ½ cup of seasoning, roughly 24 teaspoons for portion reference.
