Sazon Seasoning Recipe
Description
This Sazon Seasoning Recipe features achiote powder (annatto) as the main ingredient, which imparts a distinctive earthy aroma and reddish hue. It is mixed with garlic powder, salt, ground cumin, and coriander seeds to create a balanced seasoning blend. Optional turmeric provides a yellow color though it is not traditionally Hispanic. For more flavor, whole cumin and coriander seeds can be dry-fried and ground to release their aromas before mixing. The blend is stored in a sealed glass container away from light and moisture.
The seasoning is versatile for adding a savory, slightly nutty, and mildly spicy character to a variety of dishes such as rice, beans, soups, roasted meats, and vegetables. It mimics commercial sazon blends used widely in Hispanic cooking, providing both color and flavor enhancement.
The recipe notes that achiote powder is often labeled as annatto or achiate and turmeric is optional because it adds color but is not a traditional component in Hispanic sazon blends. This makes the seasonings adaptable depending on color preference.
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon achiote powder (aka annatto), *see Notes
- 1 Tablespoon salt
- 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon cumin seeds ground
- 1 Tablespoon coriander seeds ground
- ½ Teaspoon Turmeric optional, ground
Instructions
- If you use whole spices (for more quality), dry fry them first in a pan to release flavors and to get them crispy. Leave to cool and grind to a fine blend.
- To make a quick sazon seasoning, use spice powders. Mix in a bowl to a well combined seasoning blend.
- Store in a glass jar away from direct sunlight, humidity and heat.
Notes
- Achiote powder is sometimes labeled as annatto or achiate in stores, and powdered form is easiest to use.
- Turmeric is optional and adds yellow color but is not traditionally used in Hispanic sazon seasoning.
- Dry frying whole cumin and coriander seeds before grinding enhances the flavor of the blend.
- Store the seasoning in a glass jar away from heat, humidity, and direct sunlight to maintain freshness.
