Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 lbs russet or Yukon Gold potatoes thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk whole milk or half-and-half for creamier texture
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika for topping, optional
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese for extra flavor, optional

Instructions

Step No.1: Preheat the Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

Step No.2: Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Wash, peel, and thinly slice the potatoes (about ⅛-inch thick) using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer. Set aside.

Step No.3: Make the Cheese Sauce

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly to form a roux. Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens (about 3-4 minutes). Add cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper, stirring until smooth.

Step No.4: Layer the Potatoes

  1. Spread half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.

Step No.5: Bake the Potatoes

  1. Sprinkle with paprika and Parmesan cheese (if using). Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Step No.6: Rest and Serve

  1. Let the scalloped potatoes rest for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Thinner Slices = Even Cooking: Use a mandoline slicer for uniform potato slices.
  • For Extra Creaminess: Substitute ½ cup of the milk with heavy cream.
  • Prevent Curdling: Avoid using pre-shredded cheese, as it contains anti-caking agents that affect melting.
  • Garlic Scalloped Potatoes: Add 2 cloves minced garlic to the cheese sauce.
  • Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes: Use a mix of cheddar, Gruyère, and mozzarella for more depth of flavor.
  • Bacon Scalloped Potatoes: Stir in crispy bacon bits for a smoky touch.
  • Herb-Infused Potatoes: Add fresh thyme or rosemary for a fragrant boost.
