Scalloped Potatoes and Ham

Ingredients

  • 4 russet potato sliced into 1/4 inch slices
  • 1/2 onion , minced
  • 12 ounces ham , thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt , divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper coarse ground
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk whole
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese , shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 13x9 inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Place a layer of the potatoes in the baking dish, sprinkling with about 1/4 teaspoon salt and half the minced onions.
  3. Place a layer of about half the ham into the baking dish, then top with another layer of potatoes, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and onions.
  4. Add another layer of ham, and cover with a layer of the remaining potatoes.
  5. In a pot, add the butter on medium heat until melted, then add the flour, pepper, and remaining salt, whisking well for 30-45 seconds.
  6. Add in the milk and heavy cream slowly while whisking until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Add the cream sauce over the potatoes and cook, covered with aluminum foil, in the oven for 45 minutes.
  8. Spread shredded cheddar over the potatoes and cook uncovered in the oven for an additional 25 minutes.
