  • 8 lices rye bread use any style you like
  • butter
  • Russian dressing recipe below
  • 1 lb turkey sliced
  • 1 cup sauerkraut drained
  • 8 lices swiss cheese

homemade Russian dressing

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 5-6 Tbsp ketchup I used my favorite jalapeño ketchup, Heinz makes it
  • 3 tsp sweet relish
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1-2 tsp prepared horseradish or to taste
  • pinch salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F
  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread. Flip the slices over so the un-buttered side is up.
  3. Spread Russian dressing on the unbuttered sides of the bread.
  4. Add turkey slices to four of the eight pieces of bread.
  5. Top the turkey with the sauerkraut.
  6. Then add the cheese.
  7. Top your sandwiches with the remaining pieces of bread.
  8. If using the sheet pan, arrange the sandwiches on an unlined pan and bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the bread is golden. If you like you can flip the sandwich to crisp up the other side a bit more.
  9. Slice and serve asap with a side of dill pickles and chips.

  1. If using a griddle or skillet work in batches and grill on one side till golden, then flip and grill the other side until golden.

to make the Russian dressing

  1. Whisk the ingredients together and adjust anything to your particular taste. Keep chilled until ready to use, you can make it up to 2 days in advance.
